This dataset is revised for recasting of REAA sections using 2020 Census data. The 2020 version is the first time REAA boundaries were fully created using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, as described below.
The drawing of the recast REAA boundaries and the sections dividing the REAAs were modified to use the U.S. Census REAA and census block polygons. This represents a change from the 2010 REAA boundaries, which were generalized boundaries based off the ANCSA regions, many of which were hand drawn on PDF maps and included large swaths of ocean. In contrast, the 2020 REAA boundaries based on U.S. Census data were created in a GIS system, follow the boundaries of census blocks polygons, and are clipped to the 3 nautical mile seaward limit that traditionally defined the territorial waters of a nation. These changes represent a significant improvement over the previous 2010 version of the REAA boundaries.
Section boundaries dividing an REAA have been dissolved to make one feature per REAA.
The REAA numbers follow the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) numbering system, which is different from the Division of Elections numbering system.
